This is a mythological allegory for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and related neuroses that Ash has used in different forms for almost 20 years, but was finally actually worked into something resembling the story as he wanted to tell it while idling through the traffic in Chicago on 7/1 traveling from Madison to Lansing.

The fact that the Basement Scene is full of Dungeons and Dragons books with a Gargantuan Black Dragon on the shelf (along with the hospitality of the staff) inspired the performance to a very special place.
